Write Google Business Profile updates

A practical way to use AI for this job in a small business, with a prompt you can copy.

Your Google Business Profile shows the same photo from 2022 and no updates since. Locals searching 'plumber near me' see a competitor who posts every week. That stings.

The job
Write Google Business Profile updates
Tool(s)
ChatGPT or Gemini
Time saved
About 1 hour a month (estimate). My rough estimate, not a measured result.

The prompt

Prompt
Write 4 short Google Business Profile posts (under 100 words each) for [business] in [location]. Topics: [a service], [a seasonal tip], [a recent job], [an offer]. Plain language, include the location naturally, end with a clear next step.

Replace everything in [square brackets] with your own details. Don't paste in anything you wouldn't want stored by the AI provider.

Steps

  1. Pick four topics from what's actually happening in your business.
  2. Run the prompt.
  3. Add a real photo to each post.
  4. Post weekly from your Google Business Profile.

A worked example

An electrician in Penrith picks four topics: switchboard upgrades, a summer tip about checking air-con circuits, a recent job installing EV chargers in Glenmore Park, and $0 call-out on Tuesdays in November. Gemini writes four posts under 100 words, each mentioning Penrith or a nearby suburb naturally and ending with 'Call us' or 'Book online'.

He adds a real photo from each job (no faces, no house numbers) and schedules one post a week. It takes 15 minutes to generate and edit all four, plus a few minutes each week to post.

Time saved

Writing four posts from scratch might take you an hour. With AI, 15 to 20 minutes a month covers it. These are my estimates for a typical small business, not measured results.

What it costs (AUD)

Google Business Profile itself is free to use.

The free plans of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini handle this fine. If you end up using AI every day, the paid plans are roughly: ChatGPT Plus approx. A$30 a month, Claude Pro approx. A$29 a month billed monthly (US$20, or about A$24 a month if you pay yearly), and Google AI Pro approx. A$33 a month through the App Store. Prices approx., October 2026. Some are billed in US dollars, so your bank may add a foreign transaction fee. Check the vendor's pricing page before you buy.

Australian notes

Offers in posts need to be accurate under Australian Consumer Law: if you say '$0 call-out', make sure there are no hidden conditions, or state them clearly. Use real photos of your own work. Don't include customer addresses or anything that identifies their home.

Privacy: the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) cover most businesses turning over more than $3 million, plus some smaller ones such as health providers. Even if you're under the threshold, treat customer details with care: strip names, phone numbers and addresses before you paste anything into an AI tool.

My verdict

Small effort, keeps your profile active. Use real photos, not AI images.

Common questions

How often should I post on Google Business Profile?

Weekly is a good rhythm if you can keep it up. Consistency matters more than volume.

Do posts help my ranking?

Google doesn't publish exactly how posts affect local ranking. They do help people who find your profile decide to call.

Can I use AI images?

I wouldn't. Real photos of real jobs build trust; stock or AI images do the opposite.

Do this today

Log in to your Google Business Profile, check your hours and phone number are right, then write and publish one post using the prompt.
